RICHMOND, Virginia – Sophomore forward Ryan Flowers (Millbrook H.S./Hickory, N.C.) of the UNCW women's basketball team has been selected as the recipient of the Colonial Athletic Association Player of the Week award for the week ending Jan. 4, it has been announced by CAA officials.
It is the first time Flowers has been named as the CAA Player of the Week in her career and marks the second time in three weeks a UNCW player has earned the award. Senior guard Kelva Atkins (Granville Central H.S./Stem, N.C.) was named as the conference's Co-Player of the Week on Dec. 22.
In three games last week, Flowers averaged 11.7 points and 13.3 rebounds per game. In addition, she shot 62.9 percent from the field by making 17 of 27 field goal attempts and posted a pair of "double double" performances.
After scoring 15 points with a season-high 18 rebounds in the Seahawks' 84-80 loss at Florida Atlantic, Flowers contributed eight points with nine rebounds at Stetson.
In the Seahawks' CAA opener against William & Mary, Flowers gave UNCW a 63-62 victory when she scored on a put-back lay-up with 1.9 seconds remaining as the Seahawks overcame a seven-point deficit in the second half. Flowers posted her fourth "double double" of the season with 12 points and a game-high 13 rebounds. The third-leading rebounder in the CAA with a 9.3 average, Flowers ranks third on the team with an 8.5 scoring average. She also leads the Seahawks with a .456 field goal percentage, which ranks 10th in the CAA.
Led by Flowers, the Seahawks will play their first road CAA game of the season on Tuesday night when they travel to defending CAA champion James Madison. Opening tip-off between the Seahawks and the Dukes is slated for 7:00 p.m. from the JMU Convocation Center.
