From early on, the Wilmington Sharks (30-19, 14-8) had to play catch up with the Forest City Owls (29-23, 16-9), but the Sharks would come up short and leave the tying run on base, dropping Wednesday night’s game 6-5.
The Sharks trailed 3-0 as they took their turn at bat in the fifth inning, but Ryan Jeffers (UNC Wilmington) made sure that didn’t last long.
He lead off the inning with a solo home run to put Wilmington on the board. Alec Bohm (Wichita State) and Grant Koch (Arkansas) drove in runs after him to tie the game. Forest City’s offense wouldn’t be kept quiet though, as they would add three more over the next three innings to take the lead back.
In the eighth, Cletis Avery (Presbyterian) reached on an error and came around to score on another Jeffers double.
The Sharks trailed 6-4 headed to the final frame. Back to back walks along with a single loaded the bases with nobody out. Koch hit a sacrifice fly to score one, but two more fly outs ended the game.
The win went to Alex Evans (5-3). He threw five innings, with seven hits, three runs, two earned, one walk and six strikeouts. Easton Welch (0-1) took the loss, pitching two innings, allowing two runs, on six hits, no walks and no strikeouts. Chaz Miller (13) got the save with one perfect inning.
