CAROLINA BEACH - Carolina Beach Police Chief Ken Hinkle introduced two new K9 officers to the Town Council during their Tuesday January 13th, meeting. The two K-9's are named Nox and Ammo. He also took time to recognize those who helped raise funds for the program.
The department began searching for two K-9 officers last year to fill positions left vacant when former K-9 officers Jenna and Chief retired from service.
Hinkle said the K9 program began in 2003 and explained, "Our level of training and dedication far exceeds that of the majority of K-9 units across the nation. It is for that reason that defense attorneys in this area do not challenge our dogs or K-9 handlers."
He explained, "Due to the increase in civil liability over the years, the training and requirements of police service dogs have increased exponentially. Carolina Beach Police Department's K-9 unit has been on the forefront of this training movement by continually learning and adapting new training methods. Not only have we trained our own service dogs throughout our history but we also assist other agencies in their training as well." K-9's cost upwards of $12,000. Due to budget constraints a fundraiser was organized in early 2014 by Stefanie Juel. Other local residents and business owners began helping with the effort.
Hinkle took time to recognize those who helped fund the K-9 program:
• Ocean Grill and Tiki Bar
• Crawls for Paws
• Stefanie Juel
• Aunt Kerry's Pet Shop
• Pleasure Island Chamber of Commerce
• Carolina Beach Fire Association
• Donna Phelps of the Carolina Beach Fishing Pier
• The Lazy Pirate Restaurant
• Dr. Ked Cottrell, Pleasure Island Animal Hospital
Wayne Rouse of Crawls for Paws announced another donation to the program at the January 13th, meeting presenting a check for an additional $2,500.
