WILMINGTON, N.C. : May 13th, 2015 - Nearly a thousand Cape Fear Community College students, family, friends and faculty filled the Schwartz Center in downtown Wilmington on May 13th, to attend two graduation ceremonies. Students walked the stage after earning degrees, diplomas and certificates. The first ceremony was held for students who earned associate degrees in arts and sciences. Many of those graduates will transfer to four-year universities such as the University of North Carolina Wilmington. The second ceremony which began at around 7PM, featured students graduating from CFCC's technical and vocational programs with associate in applied sciences degrees, diplomas and certificates. Many of those students will head directly into the local workforce in fields such as health care, information technology, mechanical engineering, marine technology, cosmetology and other professions. The ceremonies also included students from the Pender and Wilmington Early College High Schools who will earn degrees before they graduate from high school.
Following the ceremonies Wednesday night, one graduate got a special surprise. Stephanie Spina walked the stage and upon returning to the auditorium to meet family and friends, she was surrounded by people taking photos of her with her boyfriend Jose Herrera. Meanwhile, family members quietly lined up behind her holding up signs saying, "Will you marry me?" When Stephanie turned around she was surprised and as she turned back around, Jose took to his knee with ring in hand and asked her to marry him.
Stephanie was overjoyed and said yes as she wiped away her tears. Jose said he was nervous all day and even though he knew she would say yes, he didn't know how she would react to the surprise. Stephanie commented, "Happiest day of my life! Graduation and I got engaged today! I can't believe it! I love my man!"
