CAROLINA BEACH - A large ship delivered two new cranes to the NC Port of Wilmington on March 29th prompting closure of portions of the Cape Fear River for a time.

The U.S. Coast Guard announced in January plans to close the Cape Fear River during delivery of the 151' foot tall cranes to establish a safety zone.

The cranes were built by Shanghai Zhenhua Heavy Industry Co., Ltd. (ZPMC). They are taller with longer booms, to accommodate the loading and unloading needs of ultra-Panamax container vessels reaching the United States East Coast.

The two cranes cost approximately $27 million dollars and will allow the Port of Wilmington to simultaneously service two ultra-Panamax vessels.

According to Port officials, "The addition of the neo-Panamax cranes represents a significant infrastructure investment in the Port, its customers and the North Carolina economy. In fact, the Port Authority’s $200 million investment in infrastructure will enable shippers to gain unprecedented access to the U.S. East Coast through the Port of Wilmington."

People gathered at various locations along the Cape Fear River to view the cranes as the large ship traveled to the Port of Wilmington .

Those locations included  Riverlights Marina Village Waterfront Park, located at 109 Pier Master Point, River Road Park, located at 6500 River Road, and Southport Waterfront Park, located at 146-176 E Bay St, which offered great views and plenty of on site parking.
