CAROLINA BEACH - Demolition of the Federal Point Shopping Center at 1018 N. Lake Park Blvd. began Friday December 7th in Carolina Beach. The demolition is part of a project to construct a new Publix grocery store.

The Carolina Beach Town Council unanimously voted to approve a request for a Conditional Use Permit at their January 9th, 2018, meeting to redevelop the Federal Point Shopping Center. The proposal called for demolition of the existing shopping center and construction of a new 51,469 square foot grocery store with an attached 8,400 square foot multi-tenant building with a patio area. The plans show areas for two additional future multi-tenant buildings.

The center was formerly home to Food Lion before that store moved to a new location near Snow's Cut Bridge on North Lake Park Blvd. Other tenants included businesses such as Maxways, Primrose Cottage, Carolina Beach Scuba and others.

Under the new plans the old Carmike Cinema will be demolished to make way for future commercial space.

While the original application didn't state a name of the grocery store chain that will occupy the new development, speculation was Carolina Beach will be home to a new Publix store. The Louisiana based G.H.K. Developments, Inc. is listed on the application and plans submitted to the Town. They completed construction of a new Publix located in Wilmington on College Road. Their website lists previous projects such as Walgreens and Publix stores.

According to Interim Town Manager Ed Parvin, the building permit for the new store was ready to be issued on Monday December 3rd, pending issuance of a check to pay for the permit and other fees in the amount of $117,029.10.

Parvin said once the permit was issued, the new owners would close on the property purchase and begin work on the new development.

According to Town Building Inspector Darrel Johnson, "The demolition at Federal Point Shopping Center has started and the owners hope to be open around July 2019."
