CAROLINA BEACH - The Carolina Beach Town Council approved using grant funds to purchase a new Multiple Event Response Trailer during their Tuesday January 22nd, workshop meeting. The cost of the trailer is $28,825 with the Town paying $1,000 of the cost.

The M.E.R.T. (Multiple Event Response Trailer) is a light-weight, affordable, highly visible (ideal for limited visibility and darkness) and rapidly deployable trailer that  stores  equipment needed in emergency situations. The trailer allows a department to have the ability to close off roads, delineate traffic, post detours, keep personnel safe, and allow vital assets to be released and re-deployed as needed. The MERT is designed to operate attached to a vehicle or in a stand-alone mode.

Intermin Town Manager Ed Parvin said the grant comes from the Department of Homeland Security and the Town recently applied for and was awarded the grant. He explained, "Basically it's something you would put out in emergency situations to handle traffic situations, detours, and other uses. It's an emergency management trailer. It would be housed by the Town. It would be our trailer but it would be available to other communities if in fact they need it."

He said, "We were quoted at just over $28,825 and the grant is for just over $27,000. This is a very quick turn around from the time we obtained the money in the past. So as soon as we purchase and after refund, we should get the money back fairly quickly so we are only out a little over $1,000."

Parvin said the Operations Department researched and recommended  applying for the grant.

The Council voted unanimously to approve the purchase. The trailer comes equipped with items such as 2-Storage Cases (one located on each side) each case is approximately 40” long x 20” wide  x 10” deep, barrier lights, traffic wands, first aid kits, fire extinguisher, solar panels for charging strobe lights and other lighting features,  detour signs, traffic barricades and traffic cones.
