CAROLINA BEACH - A body was recovered from the surf in Carolina Beach Thursday night, April 25th.

According to Detective Sergeant Scott Hettinger with the Carolina Beach Police Department, "The Carolina Beach Police Department, Carolina Beach Fire Department and New Hanover County EMS were dispatched to a call in reference to a subject down on the beach strand. The incident occurred near the area of the beach strand and Charlotte Ave. Initial reports indicate a good samaritan pulled the unresponsive male from the shallow waters. When emergency responders arrived on scene to render aid, no signs of life were present."

The individual was not carrying identification but police did find a hotel card in his possession and worked with the hotel to  positively identify the individual.

Following notification of family members, Hettinger explained, "The victim has been identified as Mr. Thomas James Dickerson, white male, 69 years of age, of Chapel Hill, NC. The next of kin has been notified. The official cause of death will be determined by the NC Office of The Medical Examiner."
The investigation is ongoing.
