"Pleasure is always derived from something outside you, whereas joy arises from within."  ~Eckhart Tolle

Randy and I moved to “Pleasure Island” 10 years ago.…well, actually we were woo’d here….without even knowing the name of this community.  I had never heard of Kure Beach or Carolina Beach or the Battle of Ft. Fisher.
During January of 2005 we drove from OH to Camp Lejeune to see our son Peter off before he left for Iraq. Peter is our youngest son.  Our older children had graduated from college and were making their own lives and our empty nest turned into a window of opportunity.  It was during that trip that we discovered Wilmington, Topsail and Wrightsville Beach.   We relocated to the beach.
We found our house quite by happenchance.  I was investigating the cost of living in comparison to Canton, OH.  I googled “rent home Wilmington.”  One site came up.  I clicked on it.  One house was on that site.  The description said, “Four bedrooms, two baths, covered decks, two blocks from beach.”  I sent the link over to Randy.   It was the first day the site went live with only one house and we were the first to respond to it.  Two weeks later we drove down to see it, stuck our toes in the ocean and signed the agreement.
We were also lucky because our neighbors embrace us.  This cemented the feeling of belonging.  Feng shui teaches us that ‘where we are’ is an integral part of ‘who we are.’  The Tao of community determines whether the experience is fulfilling or one of dissatisfaction leaving a void.  For us the connection became complete as we plugged into this energy source.
Eventually the newness of life at the beach gave way to reality that work goes on and even the ocean, the beach, and stars lost our attention as we concentrated on our “work life.”
However, I have to admit that this environment makes it oh, so much easier, to snap back to joy when you can just walk outside, breathe in the salt air and listen to the birds sing their songs.  Negative ions do that for you.
Enjoy “Pleasure Island” but don’t expect it to be the end-all for your contentment living or visiting here. Joy within can only be experienced if it is married to connection to source, self and community, balance of all beliefs and experiences and movement through cycles of life, the three underpinnings of feng shui.   ‘Where you are’ is as important as ‘who you are’ within and without.  Are you bringing joy to the party?   xo mo
