“The only things standing between you and the compassionate, wise, and creative person you want to be are matters of choice. Your choice. No one can occupy your generosity except you.” ~ Gary Zukav

Last week Randy and I attended a wedding in Charlotte and since we were heading west, decided to head out early and travel to Asheville for a few days to take a much needed mini vacation.  You know how we love the Biltmore Estate and this time we did a tour called the upstairs/downstairs tour, which gives the opportunity to explore the inner workings of the house.  If you loved Downton Abbey I would highly recommend it.
As usual, the generosity and compassion of George Vanderbilt and his family are the true legacy this man left to this world.  All those we talked to who work on the grounds or who have previously worked there, tout the fact that it was the best place they ever were employed.
Generosity and compassion.  Having money is awesome when you can better the lives of so many other people.
During my turn at driving (the driver always gets to choose the radio station) I found a local NPR station and learned about an event in Asheville at the Orange Peel the following evening.  They were showing a documentary named, “Julian Price.”
Julian Price was a generous philanthropist who inherited his wealth from his family’s fortune.  His grandfather, also named Julian Price, was an insurance executive who, according to Wikipedia, “made his fortune in the first part of the twentieth century by developing the Jefferson Standard Life Insurance Company, at the the time the largest corporation in North Carolina.”  You may be familiar with a park named after the grandfather, consisting of 4,200 acres at milepost 297 on the Blue Ridge Parkway.
The younger Julian Price changed the face of downtown Asheville.  He infused money into small businesses that needed a jolt.  The Laughing Seed Restaurant is an example of one that is flourishing today.  He approached town commissioners to make the crosswalks handicap accessible as he hired wheelchairs and convinced them to wheel themselves around the city.  He funded the Self Help Credit Union so loans could be made to deserving people who might not be able to borrow money from typical banks.
These two very generous and compassionate men inspire me.  I may never have a fortune to donate like these families but my everyday choices, infinitesimal in comparison, can make a difference for good. I choose compassion.  I choose wisdom.  I choose creativity to share generosity in this world.  We may never know when our slightest action can effect change for good in someone else's world. The choice may not always revolve around money.  A kind gesture may be what that stranger needed today.  Let this thought come to your mind as you approach crosswalks while driving on this island.  I choose to be aware of what others need and bless them with happiness and joy.  My bankroll of positive blessings can never be depleted. xo mo
