“A perfect summer day is when the sun is shining, the breeze is blowing, the birds are singing, and the lawn
mower is broken.”  ~ James Dent

We’ve just come off a 10 day vacation with our kids, their friends, their kids and the weather (if you like hot, hot, hot) was perfect.  Although it did rain on Saturday morning in Carolina Beach, Kure Beach stayed dry until everyone was gone on Sunday afternoon.  Every day was a beach day.
With Peter’s help and Kylee’s surfboard, Zander, just 5 1/2 years old, was able to balance himself up on the waves.  Next year it will be surf lessons for this little athlete.  Poppy and I took the grandkids to the movie at the lake on Sunday night. The kids’ tray of popcorn, candy and soda was only $3 a piece and the movie was free.  We sat right behind Jennifer Browne, chairperson for the Island Women Environmental committee, and I was delighted when the PSA began with the environmental trivia for the kids (and adults.)
Per tradition, we took the ferry to Southport to visit the Bullfrog Corner and returned with penguins and puppies that have headed back to OH.  The visit to the Aquarium  was made new again with the addition of butterflies and dinosaurs.
I know I complain about the carnival being a little dirty feeling, but the kids enjoyed that, too.  Even little Milo, who is not quite 2 years old, nestled up next to his big cousin Alayna, age 8 , and rode on most of the kid rides which he loved.  The biggest negative about the company CB contracts to provide the rides, is the fact that the employees are permitted to smoke cigarettes as they are working and it is especially despicable around the children. Maybe the town will consider raising the bar and setting expectations of the carnival company they procure.
The evening would not be complete without Poppy walking over carrying the white bag with telltale grease stains from Britt’s Donuts. Eating them hot is a must.  Another tradition, getting Squiggled, completed our ‘Family Night.’ Thursday dinner was local pizza on the beach as the kids played in the sand and we waited for the fireworks.  We love this island and the Pleasure Island Chamber of Commerce, the towns of Carolina Beach and Kure Beach and all the volunteers that make it so affordable and pleasant for visitors with kids.  It is not just the beach, the weather, the laid back attitude here that is delightful.  It is the community and all who work to make it better for all.  “Thank you” from a local on vacation.  xo mo
