We are coming down the home stretch with the house, hoping to obtain our Certificate of Occupancy by the end of the week.  It has taken a full year and even longer if you count the additional year designing the house, tweaking the design, having the plans engineered.  All of that took place a year after the lot was purchased and we realized, the location was just what we wanted but the configuration of this pie in a cul-de-sac was a challenge and not something a stock plan would support to get the space we desired.
The contractor we chose built a sturdy house. In fact, he went above and beyond code to obtain a ‘FORTIFIED Home™’ rating.  Our home has been built to meet a set of engineering and building standards designed to strengthen through system-specific building upgrades to minimum building code requirements that will reduce damage from specific natural hazards. All the glass in the exterior windows and doors is ‘impact resistant’ and although the initial cost was a little more, the house will not require hurricane shutters. We chose Neuma doors because they are crafted from the highest quality composite fiberglass with Hydroshield Technology creating the best combination of performance, durability, security and appearance. They are built to provide protection against water infiltration. The specially engineered composite material will never absorb water, eliminating the problems commonly associated with wood and metal doors like rotting, splintering, warping, rusting, mold mildew or delamination. The additional cost of building a Fortified Home can be recouped by additional savings of wind and hail insurance.
The detail we missed was the garage doors.  When deciding whether to have windows or not to have windows in the garage doors, we chose windows to bring light into the space.  I was concerned about the privacy but the doors being eight-foot high seemed too tall to allow someone to peer inside.  The doors were installed and the window design complemented the transoms on the front of the house.
Unfortunately, we missed the DETAIL that the glass in the garage door windows was not impact resistant.  The fortified rating would have plummeted from Gold to Bronze. With all we have already invested, I was not willing to forfeit the higher rating.  Solid panels will replace the pretty little glass windows. Our builder said to me, “The devil is in the details.”  The devil can cause costly mistakes.
As I work with my clients, my job is to not just help them ‘make pretty’ but specifically choose the products for their homes that will serve their needs for years to come.  When choosing paint we consider sheen and VOC rating in addition to color.  When choosing lighting fixtures we bear in mind ambient, general or accent lighting and what kind of bulbs to use, LED’s being my go-to because of their energy efficiency and new technology provides the CRI to be less than 3,000 which feels more comfortable in a home setting.  When choosing all other details in the home or office, we ask the question, what is this room used for?  Who uses this room and how do you want to feel in this space?
Details, details, details. I am a detail person. Being human I may miss one here or there but when details come together, the effect is magical.  xo mo
