“Every man is an omnibus in which his ancestors ride.” ~Oliver Wendell Holmes

This week as we continue our ‘walk around the bagua,’ we are examining the third area called ANCESTORS or FAMILY.
Standing in the doorway of your bedroom, turn your head to the left and as you have the tic-tac-toe grid superimposed on your floor plan, look at the middle section in front of the left hand wall area.
This area represents where you came from, your family heritage, a time in the past.  It is also represented by the number 3. SELF=1. RELATIONSHIPS=2.  FAMILY=3. Makes sense.
The element of this area is Wood and the energy is that of all things that grow.  Because it is a youthful energy, it moves easily like a young child without restrictions.  It can be unbridled and out of control because it is determined to find a way to move.
We had our street paved several years ago.  The blacktop was fresh and yet I saw a hint of green on the road.  Day after day the green became more visible.
Eventually I saw blades of grass reaching for the sun. The strength of photosynthesis should never be trivialized.
Wood energy is also like a healthy tree with deep roots to ground oneself while also being flexible to bend to the wind without uprooting or breaking.  Example: trees at Ft. Fisher, see what I mean?  The healthy ones survive.
This area of my life contains all those who came before me, creating my own unique DNA.  I recently sent in a DNA test, a Christmas present from my brother.
He wanted all siblings to get results before we travel to our grandparents’ homeland of Romania this summer.  We have joked about Transylvania, Dracula, werewolves and gypsies and finally we are setting out, with a group of cousins, to find our roots.  My quest within desires to know more about the people from whom I was begotten including the gifts they passed on to me as I pass them on to my children, our heritage which deepens roots.
If the FAMILY area of your bedroom is where the headboard of your bed is placed, strengthen your ancestral ties by adding pillows or wall art symbolizing your heritage. I would not place photos in my bedroom (I like more privacy than that!) but in a public room such as the living room or kitchen, it would be appropriate.
Also, use pictures of plants, fabrics with plants, and even real plants (if you can keep them healthy) to enhance FAMILY growth.  You are not and never will be, in this alone.
Draw upon the strength of your forefathers to ground yourself while also remaining flexible to move with life’s winds.
The wind will blow and you will sway and your roots will keep you fully grounded. My mother and father no longer walk this earth but occasionally they will come to me and whisper in my ear.
When I see a cardinal it is as though my father is saying, ’hello.’ My mom appears as a blue jay. My mother-in-law shows up as a lady bug…even on the eve of her son’s triple by-pass surgery on the 9th floor of New Hanover Hospital, in the middle of an ice storm February 2014.  How did she get there?  I can’t tell you.  I can tell you, however, her love for her son, my husband, transcends time and worlds and dimensions.  Connect to your ancestors.  xo mo
