“The Supreme Court has ruled that they cannot have a nativity scene in Washington, D.C. This wasn't for any religious reasons. They couldn't find three wise men and a virgin.” ~ Jay Leno

Excuse my sarcasm about the state of our nation, but let’s remember that humor may be the ONLY way to spend holidays with family and friends. The time intended for love and affection, giving to others and peace to all ends up being a season of shoppers trampled during door opener sales, the feeling of high anxiety of doing it “right” and eventually the letdown of unmet expectations.  To “green” your holiday festivities this year consider the 4 F’s by Stress Doc, Mark Gorkin; Fantasies, Family, Food and Finances.
1.) FANTASY - The other day I watched (for the 40th time) National Lampoon’s Christmas Vacation.  Clark Griswold is the epitome of the guy who’s fantasy of the perfect Christmas is foiled at every attempt.
Bethany: Is your house on fire, Clark?
Clark: No, Aunt Bethany, those are the Christmas lights.
2.) FAMILY – Let’s face it.  All families have members who drive each other crazy at certain times.  The successful families are those that learn how to put the “fun” back into dysfunctional.
One Thanksgiving I actually made two turkeys and forced my husband and children to eat a formal dinner twice, once with my newly widowed father at noon and the second time with my mother and stepfather at dinner time because I thought it might be uncomfortable for them to all be there together.  I realized that catering to everyone else’s ‘needs’ was insane for me.  From then on I cooked one meal.
Take care of yourself and let those around you work their own issues out, and remember, don’t take it personally.  It’s not about YOU.
The greatest family gift to give to another, “ Do what you need to do for yourself and I will do what I need to do for myself.
This is not selfish.  This is unconditional acceptance.  I love you.”
3.) FOOD – In my family of origin, food was how we showed love.  I could not leave my grandmother’s home without her sending a little something (fresh baked cookies, nut roll, fruit) for me to eat later.  Putting strict restrictions on eating habits during the holidays may only sabotage your best laid plans.  If you eat more, move more.
Regular exercise has been proven to help reduce stress, ward off anxiety and feelings of depression.  Give yourself a break and enjoy nature today for ½ hour.
Grab your Ipod or a friend and walk in the fresh air at a brisk pace.  Your physical, emotional and spiritual body will thank you for it.
4.) FINANCES – Why is it that every December I ask myself, “Why didn’t I set up a Christmas Club Account at my local bank last January?”  Finding balance in all things is learning to live a “green” lifestyle.  Scrooge held on too tight and Clark spent what he did not have, but how could he know that his boss was going to replace the huge monetary end of the year bonus with the Jelly of the Month Club?  Buy local from creative artists like the ones at Artful Living Group.
My feng shui blessings to you this year are wrapped up in CHI (movement), YINYANG (balance) and TAO (connections.)  Have a Happy and Healthy holiday season.  xo mo
