The Island of Lights Christmas Card and Ornament for 2017

By / Life on the Island / Tuesday, 19 December 2017 05:00

The Island of Lights have unveiled their much-anticipated Christmas Card and Ornament for 2017.  This year’s theme for the card and ornament is the “Heron”, a popular resident to our North Carolina coast.  The ornaments are hand-painted and numbered by the artist.   These beautiful ornaments make the perfect addition to any Christmas collection or a nice souvenir of your wonderful coastal vacation.  The Christmas Card and Ornament will now be available at the following retailers around Pleasure Island:  Carolina Beach Jewelers, the Checkered Church, Christmas Shop, Island Tackle, Jeanne’s Jewels, Touche, The Trading Post and, also the studios of Mary Trowbridge and Charlie McGee at The ArtWorks TM on Willard Street in Wilmington.   The cards are $10 per package of 10 and the ornaments are $15 each.  Raffle Tickets for the original painting are available now at the Checkered Church for $1 per ticket, $5 for 6 tickets or $10 for an arm’s length.   There are ONLY 350 of the numbered ornaments available, so don’t wait until the last minute.  The ornaments sell out early every year. Every year, the IOL commissions an artist to paint a picture to be used for the Island of Lights’ Christmas card.  The framed original painting by Tip Top Frame is then raffled off on New Year’s Eve at midnight.  This year, Mary Trowbridge created the painting of the heron which is used for the 2017 Christmas card.  Mary has been drawing and painting all her life, but a few classes in watercolor in the 1990s made her focus on a true love. . . the surprising actions of the watercolor medium. Mary’s subjects include portraits of people, animals, landscape, still life, floral and abstract.  Mary has taught watercolor classes for many years because she loves to encourage the artistic skills of her students.  Mary lives in Wilmington, NC, and has found a wonderful art home in her studio in The ArtWorks TM, 200 Willard Street, Wilmington, where you will find her hard at work at her craft. Starting in 2016, Theresa “Charlie” McGee was selected as the featured artist who hand-paints the Christmas ornaments for Island of Lights each year.  This is Charlie’s second year and she did not disappoint.  Charlie is a certified instructor of Acrylic, W-Oils, Clay and many other programs with Donna Dewberry.  Acrylics is her favorite medium, but she enjoys working with all mediums.  Charlie has been teaching at AC Moore since 2008, where she shares her knowledge with her students.  For the last four years Charlie has also been a resident artist at The ArtWorks TM, 200 Willard Street, Wilmington.  Her studio is a place for her to create and exhibit her work. Island of Lights is a non-profit organization that was created to promote tourism on Pleasure Island during the off-season.  For more than 25 years, they have made Pleasure Island one of the top spots to visit during the Thanksgiving and Christmas Holiday and New Year’s Eve.  Throughout the year, IOL puts on many activities the whole family can enjoy.  In addition to the Lighting of the Lake with Santa Claus, Christmas Parade, Flotilla, Tour of Homes and New Year’s Celebrations, the Island of Lights hold their annual Fashion Show and Luncheon which displays the fashionable clothing you can purchase in local shops on Pleasure Island. The Island of Lights’ members volunteer their time to organize the many great events throughout the holidays to make Pleasure Island a special destination during the winter months.  Please come join the fun at our meeting held the first Tuesday of every month in the Carolina Beach Library.
We would love to see you there.  Any questions concerning the Island of Lights Painting, Christmas Cards or Christmas Ornaments, please contact Dianna Williams @ 910-398-8720.
