James R. Abel (Jim), age 84, passed away peacefully into the arms of Jesus on April 27, 2020 after being cared for by his children in Troutman, NC.
Jim was born on November 5, 1935 in Oklahoma City, Oklahoma to Lucille Wright Abel, who later was remarried to Samuel West, who Jim considered his father. His biological father had passed away while he was a young child.
Jim joined the Army shortly after high school and was stationed in Fort Bragg, NC where he was an 82nd Airborne Paratrooper. While in NC, he met Ruth Rives Abel, who later became his wife on July 31, 1956. They had four children together: Debbie, Teresa, Jimmy and Susie.
Jim touched the lives of everyone he met with his big smile and beautiful blue eyes. He was a friend of nature and loved being on the water. Some of his favorite pastimes included playing golf, fishing, and Tuesday poker nights with his buddies. He also loved watching the Carolina Panthers.
He was preceded in death by his mother Lucille Wright West, father Samuel West, brother Alfred West, brother-in-law Jack Willingham and a special niece Holly Willingham Williams.
He is survived by his children, Deborah L. Abel, Teresa A. Clontz (Ron), James R. Abel Jr., and Susan A. Lancaster (Freddie). Granddaughters, Kelli A. Taylor (Ricky), Lindsey A. Treece (Brian), Sarah L. Joffe (Ben), and Nikki L. Young (Marcus). Great-Grandchildren, Charlotte, Alston-Kate, and Caroline Young, Brogan and  Samuel Treece. Sister, Vicki W. Willingham, and many loved nieces and nephews.
A celebration of life will be held at a later date. The family is very grateful and blessed beyond measure by the condolences and love shown by all during this difficult time.
Donations may be made to Mountain Valley Hospice, 243 North Lee Ave., Yadkinville, NC 27055, where Jim received the most wonderful care.
