Update: I had planned on sending out questionnaires to candidates for municipal elections in November, by September 13th. Then Dorian blew by the area and there is now a delay. The new date for the questions to be sent to candidates is October 2nd.

Every election year the Island Gazette sends candidates seeking election as Mayor or Council member a questionnaire. This election season we are expanding that tradition from one questionnaire to multiple ones. Additionally, interviews will be published for each candidate covering a broad range of community issues. The first set of questions will be general in nature allowing each candidate to elaborate on their campaign platform. The answers will be published separately for each municipality. What issues concern you? The Island Gazette would love to hear from readers in letters - or anonymously - about the issues they are most concerned with during the upcoming election season. Feel free to send us your opinions so we can investigate and pose questions to candidates. You can email me at This email address is being protected from spambots. You need JavaScript enabled to view it. or call 910-458-8156. There are a lot of important issues to be discussed when assessing each candidate’s platform. This election season will be interesting because of the wide range of people and their individual experiences and backgrounds. There are some familiar faces and some newcomers to the political arena. There are many issues confronting candidates throughout New Hanover County such as infrastructure, property taxes, water and sewer rates, traffic congestion, opioid epidemic, beach nourishment, inlet maintenance, CAMA Land Use Plan, numerous zoning issues, parking, off shore drilling for oil and gas, and other important issues that voters will be looking to candidates for answers and leadership. Also, the Pleasure Island Chamber of Commerce will hold a Public Forum Monday, September 30th ·    6:30 pm - 9:30 pm at the Courtyard Marriott - Carolina Beach - at 100 Charlotte Avenue   ·   Carolina Beach, NC. Another forum will be held for Kure Beach on October 3rd at the Kure Beach Town Hall - same time slot.
Our first questionnaires will be sent to candidates on October 2nd.
