A BIG QUESTION: WHAT IF

By / Letters to the Editor / Sunday, 14 October 2018 15:57

What if during the island’s recent experience with hurricane Florence there had been a 7500 square foot building with a full electric commercial kitchen, bathrooms facilities with showers, a large hall that can feed 250 plus people, two large class, a wireless system, and high capacity generator connections would that have contributed to the comfort and recovery of the island?
Of course, Yes it would and it would be great!  Well within a year there will be that type of building.  It will be located on the campus of St. Paul’s United Methodists Church, 300 Harper Avenue, Carolina Beach.
The initial groundbreaking will be within 30 days and the building will be completed in about 10 to 11 months.
The building will be named  St. Paul’s Community Life Center and be available to the entire Pleasure Island Community. Plans for the building already included offering the auditorium for the use of Carolina Beach Elementary School for its many programs that require a larger venue than at the school. Many additional uses for the facility can include community dinners, social events, receptions, and celebrations and even concerts with seating for 500.
But one of the most important uses of the building will be as a community emergency shelter and recovery center. In addition to offering shelter to victims and families of a disaster the building can also serve as a dormitory for clean up and repair crews and the many volunteers that arrive to assist in the recovery.
On Saturday November 10, 2018, from 11 AM to 4 PM, a Food Truck Rodeo and Silent Auction will be held at 300 Harper Avenue to help raise additional funds to make the project happen.
Besides the food trucks there will be many silent auction items and live auction. The event will be held rain or shine. A large tent with tables and chairs will provide a place to sit and enjoy the food and  drink, listen to some great entertainment, and view and to bid on a great variety of silent auction items and a couple of big items that will be offered during the live auction. It is not too late to donated an auction item goods or services. All we ask that it be a new item or a service at $25.00 in value or greater For more information please contact Patty or Ken Badoian Co-Chairs of the event at This email address is being protected from spambots.
