Eagles move to 2-0 in Conference Play with win over the #1 3A Team in North Carolina

• 3/10 – Ashley 5 South Brunswick 2 - Ashley sent freshman southpaw Price King to the mound Tuesday for their conference opener against South Brunswick, and he picked up his first high school win, pitching 4 strong innings in a 5-2 win.  After giving up a run in the first inning, the Screaming Eagles and Alex Highsmith started off the top of the 2nd with a base hit to left.  D.C. Russ then reached on a hit by pitch, followed by a Jordan Fentress infield single to load the bases with one out.  Highsmith scored on a wild pitch, and then Kason Valentine drove in Russ with a check swing single to right.  Kyle Stewart then singled up the middle to score Fentress.  The Eagles finished the inning with a 4-1 lead, which is all they would need.  Christian Tafoya threw the last 3 innings, picking up his first save along the way.  Offensively, the Eagles were led by Stewart with two hits and an RBI, and Valentine, who was 1-2 with an RBI.  Ashley is now 1-1 for the season, and 1-0 in the Mideastern conference.  Ashley has a home conference game against Topsail scheduled for Friday at 6 PM.  In other scores, Topsail beat Hoggard 10-0, and West Brunswick defeated Laney 5-4 in extra innings.
• 3/12 – Ashley 4 Topsail 0 - Tonight at the Ashley baseball field, the Screaming Eagles hosted the #1 ranked 3A team in the state, the Topsail Pirates, in a matchup of undefeated conference teams.  Donovan Francis made sure the Eagles would remain undefeated in the conference, limiting the Pirates to just 3 hits over 7 innings, needing only 71 pitches to secure the 4-0 win.  Ashley struck first in the bottom of the 1st inning, with Christian Tafoya starting things out with a 1-out bunt single.  Francis followed with a walk, then Alex Highsmith chopped an infield single down the 3rd base line.  Lee Fentress then hit a ball to the first baseman, who proceeded to throw it past the catcher, allowing Tafoya and Francis to score.
After Highsmith was thrown out at the plate on a hard hit ball by D.C. Russ, Jordan Fentress was hit by a pitch to load the bases.  Drake Overton then coaxed a walk with the bases loaded to drive in the third run.  As Donovan continued getting outs on the mound, we added an insurance run in the 4th, as Evan Laverick reached on a dropped strikeout, then scored from first base on a fielding error.  From that point on, it was smooth sailing for Donovan, as he retired the last 10 batters in order.
With the win, Ashley takes early possession of the conference lead, with a 2-0 record in the Mideastern. Our overall record is 2-1.
