ROCK Hill, South Carolina – Senior Meredith Bozzi finished second in the Women's 1,500 Meters to highlight UNCW's performances on the final day of the Adidas Winthrop Invitational on Saturday.
Bozzi, from Basking Ridge, N.J., moved up in distance this weekend and didn't miss a step, clocking a 4:40.46 to place behind only Ohio's Tessa Weigand at 4:37.57. Student-athletes from 33 schools competed in the three-day meet at the Irwin "Ike" Belk Track Complex on the campus of Winthrop University
In other women's action, sophomore Ramira Mayse came in sixth in the 100 Hurdles with a time of 14.94 after running into a strong head wind. Bozzi, meanwhile, combined with teammates Jamie Mangold, Jordyn Rivenbark and Alyssa Omile to finish sixth in the Women's 4x400 Relay with a 3:57.69 time.
In addition, sophomore Alexis Dickerson wound up fifth in the discus with a PR throw of 140-8. On the men's side, junior Bryan Brackney raced to a seventh place finish in the Men's 1,500 Meters in 4:02.53.  Sophomore Moe Holmes also finished seventh in the Men's High Jump at 6-0.75. In the unseeded Men's 800 Meter heats early Saturday, senior Zack Nifong ran a PR of 1:56.36. "Overall, we were a bit tired looking this weekend and for many, that was expected," said Layne Schwier, UNCW's interim head coach. "We had a hard training week and many were really feeling the effects on their legs. The conditions were not ideal, with wind and some rain at times today, but we can't let that hold us back because everyone competed in the same conditions.
"We have several student-athletes that still need to get more consistent with their results and others who are becoming more consistent and can expect a breakthrough very soon. Consistency has to come first. We're excited to head to High Point next week to a meet we have never competed in. With just six weeks remaining before the CAA meet, we have to keep the pedal down in training and stick to the grind of getting better each day."
The Seahawks compete in the fifth of seven outdoor meets on Friday and Saturday, April 1-2, at High Point's Vert Stadium.
