Over 1,100 People participated in the 9th Annual William H. Craig Race for Life 5k

Cape Fear Flyer’s have a amazing showing for their Final Race of the 2015 Season

The Wilmington Family YMCA held their 9th annual William H. Craig Race for Life 5k this past Saturday, December 12th at Legion Stadium in Wilmington. The race was established to honor the legacy of Dr. Bill Craig and his many contributions to the community. This race was presented this year by Campbell and Covington Orthodontics.
Also a huge Thank You to all the other sponsors that make this race possible including, Pet Dairy, Tru Moo, Chick-Fil-A, Live Oak Bank, Omega Sports, Fountain Financial, Gas Centers, The Pediatric Center, Harris Teeter, Subway, Dermatology Associates, Allergy Partners of Coastal Carolina and Piedmont Natural Gas.
All funds from this event will be used to provide financial support on an annual basis to programs that Dr. Craig supported including; the Girls on the Run and STRIDE programs, the Victory Junction Gang, and other charities involving children. 1100 runners are expected at this race. Approximately 550 will be boys and girls who are participating in the Girls on the Run and STRIDE programs.
The Cape Fear Flyers were well represented in this race with 30 athletes and coaches either running in the race, or coaching. Saturday was definitely a good day for running and the Cape Fear Flyers coach and Carolina Beach resident Greg Zinner. Greg lead the way for the Flyers and the race,  finishing in 1st Place overall with a time of 18:57. Coach Greg was followed by 12 year old Zachary Knott who was in 6th Place overall and 1st in his age division with a time of 20:17. Coach Jeff Schmidt was close behind in 8th Place overall and 1st in his age division with a time of 20:59. Finishing in 2nd Place overall for females, with an amazingly fast time for a 10 year old, was Sarah Martin running a personal best time of 21:17 (only 23 seconds behind the 1st place female). Cian Perry was 12th overall and 2nd in his age division with a time of 21:21 and a new personal record. Coach Amie Harrison was the 3rd overall female with a time of 22:11. 10 year old Carter Grace was 3rd in his age division and 25th overall with a time of 22:30. Carter O’Donnell was 27th overall and 4th in the 9 & Under age division with a personal record time of 22:54. Zachary Knott’s father Paul won his age division with a time of 23:09. Isiaih Perry finished in 7th place in his age division (that included over 150 runners). Sarah Martin’s father Jeff finished 2nd in his age division with a time of 23:33. Maris Toppin won the 9 & Under Age Division for females with a time of 22:34, followed closely by teammate Hannah Grace with a personal record time of 23:47 Evan Acome set a new personal best time with a time of 24:55 and was 9th in his age division, followed closely by teammate Sawyer Harrison with a time of 24:57. Katelyn Carter finished in 5th Place in the 10-11 Age Division with a time of 25:13. The rest of the Flyers times were: Jack O’Donnell with personal record time of 25:30, Maddox Rex a personal record time of 26:50, Jackson Norr 26:52, Danner Harrison 27:00, Jacob Sawyer 27:06, Holly McKee a personal record of 27:10, Gerald Zinner (Greg Zinner’s Dad) took 2nd Place in his age division with a time of 27:12, Ava Toppin 27:48, Peyton Dunker 27:52, Joselyn Gibson set a personal record with a time of 28:08, Reese Ingram 28:31, Eva Lily Perry 29:19, Riley Perdue 29:22, Coach Gary Toppin 29:47, Porter Harrison 31:15, Kaydee Acome 37:28, Dylan Zuege 39:43 and Mom Karen Zuege 39:46.
This was an amazing season and watching some of these kids go from barely running 400 Meters in September to racing a 5K by December was a testamnet to these kids heart and will power. While the Cape Fear Flyers are finished with their 2015 Season, they are already planning their 2016 Season which will include: Pre-Track Training, Track & Field Season, and Cross Country Season.
