CAROLINA BEACH - The ongoing Phase 1-A infrastructure project to replace aging water, sewer and storm water utility lines in Carolina Beach is now anticipated to be complete by May 15th.
Town Manager Michael Cramer explained to Council during a Planning Retreat held at the Marriot Hotel in Carolina Beach January 27th, "I think everyone knows where that project is. It's like a bomb went off in part of Town, but we are making progress."
He explained, "East of Lake Park on Cape Fear and Canal Drive as well as the Northern Section of the Boardwalk will be complete by April 1st. West of Lake Park Blvd, from Lake Park to 3rd Street on Cape Fear, our goal is to get that section done by April 1st. From 3rd Street to 6th Street, probably May."
Cramer explained, "We had some weather delays and some other things. We found a lot of underground utilities that we didn't know were there."
The Phase 1-A project is part of a long-term five-phase project.
Work is expected to begin on the sidewalks along Cape Fear Blvd east of Lake Park Blvd in the near future as part of the final streetscape plan including wider sidewalks, new landscaping and a newly paved road.
Limited parking has reopened along the north side of Cape Fear Blvd near the Boardwalk area with signs directing traffic to local businesses.
The Town is posting regular updates on their website at and on their Facebook page alerting the public to when certain streets are closed to traffic.
