CAROLINA BEACH - Carolina Beach Planning Commissioner and member of the Town's Harbor Commission, 64-year-old Richard Edward Knott of Saint Joseph Street, was arrested February 16th, at around 9:30PM. Officers charged Knott with 2 counts of assault with a firearm upon a government official, 1 count of assault on a female and 1 count resisting arrest. Officers responded to a call from a friend about "a possible domestic situation". When officers arrived one of them spotted a man inside the residence with a handgun. When the porch light came on, officers say Knott walked outside holding a semi-automatic 1911 style handgun. The officer ordered Knott to drop the weapon and said Knott instead began raising the weapon and pointed it at the officer. Knott went back into the house. Another family came out of the house and under police protection. Knott then came outside without a weapon and was arrested. The firearm and ammunition were later recovered from the house.
Wife Janet reported that earlier in the evening things became tense and Richard threw a cell phone at her striking her in the face.
Knott was taken to the New Hanover County Detention Center. He was issued "no bond" for the charge of assault on a female and issued a $150,000 bond for the two charges of assault with a deadly weapon against law enforcement officers. According to the Carolina Beach Police Department was still in jail at press time on Tuesday afternoon February 24th.
In an interview with WWAY News Channel 3, Knott said the incident was a misunderstanding and stemmed from an argument between him and his wife. He told WWAY there was a misunderstanding on the part of the police department. He claimed that when he realized who it was, he put the gun away and then opened the door unarmed.
