CAROLINA BEACH -  A project to replace aging water, sewer and storm water lines in downtown Carolina Beach is nearing completion.
Last week crews finished replacing underground lines on Cape Fear Blvd east of Lake Park Blvd. That portion of Cape Fear Blvd has been paved and crews are continuing to finish up work on sidewalks and landscaping. Canal Drive behind the Boardwalk area will soon be paved with the addition of new sidewalks.
Cape Fear Blvd west of Lake Park Blvd is nearing completion. Crews were working last week to open that section of road prior to the Easter holiday week. For the area on Cape Fear from Lake Park Blvd to 3rd Street, between now and April 30th crews will complete installation of storm water pipes, remove existing sidewalks, install new sidewalks, grade the road and put down new pavement. New landscaping will be added in that area.
On Cape Fear from 3rd Street to 6th Street, the schedule calls for completing installation of water, sewer and storm water line connections at 5th Street, installing new sidewalks, grading and paving the road. Landscaping and final finishing touches should be complete by May 15th.
Town Manager Michael Cramer explained last week, "During construction on Cape Fear we have had several setbacks including finding underground water and sewer lines that we did not know about and weather delays due to poor conditions. Because of those issues I have granted Civil Works Contractors (CWC) a time extension on the project. The original substantial completion date was scheduled for March 13th. I have granted CWC a 90-day extension so the new substantial completion date is June 13th. Liquidated damages for this work would not begin until after June 13th."
