PLEASURE ISLAND - Carolina Beach Town Manager Michael Cramer said earlier this week a project to pump sand on the beach front in Carolina Beach and Kure Beach is scheduled to begin in November of this year.
Cramer explained, "I attended the Coastal Storm Damage Reduction meeting with the Corp of Engineers and discussed the next project cycle. The Corp stated that they believe that we will have sufficient Federal, State and New Hanover County Room Occupancy Tax (ROT) Funds to place approximately 770,000 cubic yards of sand on the Carolina Beach project beginning in November 2015."
Cramer explained, "The Corp anticipates bidding and awarding both the Carolina Beach and Kure Beach projects at the same time."
That schedule is:
1. Issue Solicitation for bids: July 13, 2015
2. Bid Opening: August 11, 2015
3. Award Contract: August 25, 2015
4. Notice to Proceed: October 1, 2015
5. Start Date: November 16, 2015
6. Contract Completion Date: April 30, 2016
Cramer explained, "The process is starting earlier than normal and is expected to be completed before the tourist season or turtle and bird habitat seasons."
The last beach nourishment project in Carolina Beach was completed in early June 2013. The $4.6 million dollar shore protection project pumped over 900,000 cubic yards of sand from the northern end of the beach at Freeman Park south to an area near the downtown Boardwalk.
A project to pump 432,000 cubic yards of sand onto Kure Beach was also completed in 2013.
