WILMINGTON, N.C. : June 1st, 2015 - Starting at 7 a.m., Tuesday, June 2, and ending at 5 p.m., Friday, June 5, the N.C. Department of Transportation will replace expansion joins on the entrance ramp bridge to I-140 East from U.S. 421 over the Cape Fear River north of Wilmington.
Expansion joints, which contract during cold weather and expand during warm weather, protect a bridge from damage due to extremes in temperature. The expansion joints have to periodically be replaced due to normal wear.
The ramp will remain open to traffic during this work. Traffic will be shifted to one side of the ramp while crews replace the joints in a work zone on the other side of the ramp.
Although there will not be any detours, drivers are still urged to seek alternate routes. Motorists are also advised to use caution while traveling in the area and to expect delays. NCDOT reminds motorists to watch signs for construction information, stay alert and obey the posted speed limit.
For real-time travel information at any time, call 511, visit the Traveler Services section of the NCDOT website at www.ncdot.gov  or follow NCDOT on Twitter.
