UPDATE: Authorities have identified the deceased as 40-year-old Tania Nicole Dunbar. She was serving as a U.S. Army warrant officer at Fort Bragg and vacationing at Freeman Park.

CAROLINA BEACH - Carolina Beach Town Manager Michael Cramer said a woman was found deceased at a campsite in Freeman Park Sunday morning. Cramer said the woman's name is being withheld until they can notify their next of kin. He said it appeared "she fell and hit her head on her truck door handle." She was visiting Freeman Park with another person over the weekend but that person had already left prior to her accident. He said police detectives are investigating the incident but have no reason to suspect foul play. The woman was found in zone 4 which is the first zone within the park that permits camping in designated campsites.

Freeman Park, located beyond the end of Canal Drive on the Northern End of Pleasure Island, is largely outside of the Town's jurisdiction.
They have authority to manage the area as a park. That was granted to them by the New Hanover County Board of Commissioners some years ago. There is a fee charged for vehicle access to drive on the beach front within the park. The area is a popular destination in the summer offering a limited number of designated campsites, police patrols, lifeguards, restrooms and trash pickup.
