KURE BEACH - Kure Beach Police are investigating the shooting of a man reported just before 4:30PM Sunday afternoon. The man was reported as sitting on a bench outside of Jack Mackerel's Restaurant in the 100 block of K. Avenue. He was transported to New Hanover Regional Medical Center.

Police Chief Dennis Cooper said this evening that detectives are still investigating the incident. He said at this time they have three adults and one juvenile detained. The man that was shot is still at the hospital. He was shot in the upper thigh and it's a non-life-threatening injury.

Chief Cooper said they are conducting interviews to try and determine what led to the incident. He said it appears to have been a result of an altercation in the area between Freddie's Restaurant and Jack Mackerel's Restaurant but they are not yet sure of the specifics of that altercation.

UPDATE: Monday morning 11:AM - Chief Cooper said detectives arrested Tonya Michelle Jones, age 38, of Hope Mills, NC for shooting William J. Cheney, age 27, of Alamance County, NC, in the upper thigh. Witness descriptions allowed Carolina Beach Police and the New Hanover County Sheriff's Department to stop a vehicle occupied by Jones and other occupants - including a juvenile - near Snow's Cut Bridge leaving the Island Sunday afternoon. Jones was charged with "Assault with a deadly weapon with intent to inflict serious injury" and placed in the New Hanover County Detention Center under a $75,000 bond.
