CAROLINA BEACH - According to Sergeant Jason Augst with the New Hanover County Sheriff's Department, detectives are investigating after the body of an unidentified Hispanic male was recovered from the Cape Fear River near the Carolina Beach State Park boat ramp early Saturday morning August 1st.
Sgt. Augst explained, "The body was discovered by two fishermen and removed from the water by Sheriff’s Office personnel.  The body was examined on scene and did not reveal any signs of foul play, but initially appears to be consistent with a drowning. The identity of the victim is unknown at this time, and it has not been determined where the man entered the water. The investigation is ongoing."
The Carolina Beach Fire Department was also dispatched early Saturday morning before 8AM to assist.
The body was floating in the water just northwest of the state park marina.
On Tuesday Sgt. Augst said an autopsy was completed and the preliminary cause of death is still listed as drowning. He said the body has not been identified and detectives are working with neighboring jurisdictions to see if they can match a missing persons report. Also, they are still investigating where and how the male entered the water.
Augst said if they are able to obtain a composite sketch of the person, they may solicit the help of local media to identify the body.
