CAROLINA BEACH - The Carolina Beach Town Council will discuss an upcoming project to relocate overhead utility lines underground in the area of the Carolina Beach Boardwalk, Cape Fear Blvd and a portion of Canal Drive during their Tuesday August 25th, meeting at 6:PM.
The project will relocate overhead utility lines underground to improve the aesthetic appeal of the area. That includes power, phone and cable lines.
Underground conduit has already been installed along Cape Fear Blvd and Canal Drive. Some work was previously completed on the northern end of the Boardwalk in preparation for the new ocean front Hampton Inn and Suites at 1 Harper Avenue.

Planning for the project began in 2014.

The Town does not know the actual cost and will receive estimates prior to the August 25th Town Council meeting. At that point Council will be provided information and discuss various details including who will pay the cost for connections once overhead utility lines are relocated underground, the overall cost of the project, schedule and other relevant information.

Town Manager Michael Cramer explained on Tuesday August 18th, "We do not have a contract that has been awarded for this project.  We have asked Billy Eason to develop estimates of the cost for various properties at the boardwalk to convert from above ground to underground lines. I have not received those estimates yet."

Conduits have been installed along Cape Fear Blvd near the Boardwalk and up to 3rd Street. In June Gil DuBois - Director of Public Utilities - updated Council saying, "We've also worked real close with AT&T, Progress Energy, Duke Power and the cable company and right now there are conduits in and we've already looked at some stuff moving forward this fall to get the rest of the stuff on the boardwalk underground."
The meeting is August 25th, at 6PM at Town Hall.
