This past Saturday was all about local children and bicycle safety as the Carolina Beach Police Department hosted the long, awaited return of their Bicycle Rodeo. This year’s event featured the KING BMX stunt show as well as over twenty carnival games, thousands of dollars in raffle prizes, a bicycle safety course, bounce houses, face painting, helmet fittings, live music from DJ Tommy Gun and more.
Every child left with a properly fitted helmet, an awesome tie-dye rodeo t-shirt, CBPD reusable bag along with several prizes and giveaways. Special thanks to Cape Fear Cyclist, Island Women, Island Men, Southern Coastal Womens Club, Girl Scout Troop 867 as well as everyone else who came out and volunteered their time to Saturday’s event.
The first combination bicycle registration and rodeo was held in January of 1982 and was sponsored by the Pleasure Island Kiwanus Club, Carolina and Kure Beach Police Department and Pack 210. The last event was held in 2009 and after limited resources laid dormant for over 5 years. Special thanks to all of this years sponsors for bringing the rodeo back with a bang! Event Co-Sponsors: the Carolina Beach Police Department, Wilkins and Wilkins General Contracting Inc, the Lazy Pirate/Drifters Reef/CB Boatyard, Rountree and Losee, Island Women and Shore Break Bikes. Diamond Sponsors: the Pleasure Island Chamber of Commerce, Michael and Son, Hang Ten Grill, Harris Teeter, Wheel Fun Rentals/ Fudge Boat and Southern Signs. Platinum Sponsors: the Pleasure Island Revitalization Association (PIRA), Coldwell Banker SeaCoast Realty and the Golden Sands Motel. Gold Sponsors: Island Men, the Pleasure Island Parrot Heads, Carolina Beach Furniture, Carolina Beach Realty, Source Munitions, Sessoms Interior, the Carolina Beach Rec Center, Pediatric Dentistry and the Courtyard by Marriott.
