NEW HANOVER CTY -  Tuesday November 5th, is Election Day for municipal offices in New Hanover County.

The filing period began Friday, July 5, 2019 at 12:00PM and ends on Friday, July 19, 2019 at 12:00 PM.

For Carolina Beach, Kure Beach and Wrightsville Beach, the Offices of Mayor and two Council seats will be up for election. For the City of Wilmington, the Office of Mayor and three Council seats will be up for election.

The New Hanover County Board of Elections will hold two educational seminars about "voter photo identification requirements" on Tuesday July 23rd, 2019. The first seminar is scheduled for 2:pm on July 23rd at the New Hanover County Government Center, in the Andre' Mallette Training Center, Training Room B, 230 Government Center Drive, Suite 135, in Wilmington, NC.

The second seminar is scheduled for 6:pm the same day at Cape Fear Community College Union Station, Room U-470, at 502 N. Front Street in Wilmington. The public is encouraged to attend.

Beginning in 2020, voters will be required to show a photo I.D. before they vote. That includes in person and voter by mail with some exceptions. According to the Board of Elections, "In November 2018, North Carolina voters approved an amendment to the N.C. Constitution to require voters to present photo ID at the polls. Session Law 2018-144 requires each county board of elections to hold at least two voter ID seminars before September 1, 2019. Attendees also will receive information about voting options, including absentee-by-mail, One-Stop early voting and Election Day voting."

When filing to seek the office of Mayor or a Council seat, a "Notice of Candidacy" must be signed in the presence of the Chairman, or Executive Director of the State or New Hanover County Board of Elections, or a candidate may have his or her signature on the notice of candidacy acknowledged and certified to by any officer authorized to administer an oath, including a notary (G.S. § 163A-972). In signing his or her Notice of Candidacy, the candidate may use a nickname if candidate complies with the requirement specified in G.S. § 163A-972 and which includes submitting an affidavit.
