FORT FISHER -
Plan ahead for the potential to take alternate routes to Southport over the Labor Day weekend. The Southport Fort Fisher Ferry has suspended operations due to a broken cable on one of the ramps at the dock. The cable broke and the counter weight sank to the bottom. DOT officials say it could be the end of the week before repairs are completed. The repair may require the use of a crane to lift the weight from the bottom. Over the Labor Day weekend, locals and tourists may have to use an alternate route to Southport and Oak Island. That route requires traveling north to Wilmington, crossing the Cape Fear Memorial Bridge and using US-17 S/US-76 West and NC-87 South to NC-211 S/N Howe St. in Smithville. The total time is just under an hour, or more depending on traffic.
