CAROLINA BEACH - The Carolina Beach Fire Department responded to a report of a structure fire at the Sea Merchants Grocery Store at 257 Cape Fear Blvd shortly after 7PM Monday night, September 23rd.

Carolina Beach Fire Chief Alan Griffin said there was an electrical fire in the Heating and Air unit on top of the building. The motor caught fire and smoke was being blown into the building.

Chief Griffin said firefighters setup fans to remove the  smoke and used thermal  imaging cameras to see behind walls to detect any hot spots.

No one was injured. Some equipment on the roof was damaged due to a power surge.

Mike Patel, owner of the store, said he heard a couple of loud booms coming from area power poles prior to the event.

Sea Merchants opened the following morning and a company was hired to repair the damaged equipment on the roof.

Patel said other than the loss of some ice cream in a freezer, everything is fine.

Chief Griffin explained they were dispatched to the fire as they were heading to the boardwalk to do extended hose drills.

After leaving Sea Merchants fire crews decided to continue on and conduct their training drills.
