CAROLINA BEACH -   Fire crews responded to a structure fire in Carolina Beach at around 1am Tuesday morning December 17th at 1101 Merchant Lane in the area of Saint Joseph Street.

A neighbor heard a noise and alerted the people in the home. All five people made it out of the house. Police Detective Sergeant Scott Hettinger explained, "The call came in at 1:11am Tuesday morning at an address on Merchant Lane. When police arrived, the backside of the house was in flames."

Hettinger said a neighbor reported hearing a loud noise, like an explosion, and then alerted the neighbors in the house. He said five people made it safely out of the house. Three kids and two adults.

Hettinger said, "The cause of the fire is still under investigation by the Fire Department."

The Carolina Beach Fire Department, Kure Beach Fire Department and New Hanover County Fire responded to the call.
