CAROLINA BEACH - Several residents came to the aid of a lady vacationing in Carolina Beach on June 21st. The  victim was reportedly taking out the trash at a property on Sand Fiddler Lane when she was assaulted by a male who began strangling the victim.

Carolina Beach Police arrested Sergio Aguilar-Mendoza, 21 years old, of Raleigh, NC, and charged him with "Assault by Strangulation", "Intoxicated and Disruptive" and, "Assault on a Female".

According to Detective Sergeant Scott Hettinger, "Sergio Aguilar-Mendoza... was arrested June 21, 2020 after multiple 911 calls were made just after 4:30 P.M. in reference to a female being assaulted and choked by Aguilar-Mendoza in the 200 block of Sand Fiddler Ln.  A resident jumped in to help the victim, stop the assault and held Aguilar-Mendoza until police were able to take him into custody. The victim did not know Aguilar-Mendoza."

Aguilar-Mendoza was placed on a 15,000 dollar secured bond and is still in custody of the New Hanover County Jail.

One resident posted their description of the incident on a private Facebook page following the arrest stating, "He is currently in jail and hope he stays there. My sister and I heard a lady screaming for help last night and found this guy was on top of her. He attacked her and strangled her while she was trying to take her trash out. The poor women is here on vacation. My fiance and sisters boyfriend followed him until CBPD was able to track him down."

They expressed thanks to the Police Department adding, "Prayers for her and her family."
