Man Charged With Hitting Pedestrians With Vehicle Featured

CAROLINA BEACH - The Carolina Beach Police Department arrested a man after he hit two pedestrians on July 23rd.
According to Detective Scott Hettinger on July 23rd, 2020 at 7:48 p.m. Carolina Beach Police and Fire Departments, and New Hanover County EMS were dispatched to the 200 block of Ocean Blvd. in reference to a vehicle striking two pedestrians. Upon arrival, officers located the two victims who were both transported to New Hanover Regional Medical Center with what are believed to be non-life threatening injuries."
Hettinger explained, "The driver of the vehicle,58-year-old Alexander Edward Zielinski of Kure Beach, N. C., was arrested at the scene."
Mr. Zielinski was charged with Driving While Impaired and additional traffic offenses. Mr. Zielinski was placed on a 10,000-dollar bond and confined to the New Hanover County Jail.
This follows a previous incident when Carolina Beach Police arrested 74-year-old Erwin Ellis Williams of Carolina Beach on Sunday May 31st following a hit-and-run incident that resulted in the death of a man walking along Carolina Beach Avenue North.
On Tuesday June 30th, police took out a warrant for Williams arrest on the charge of Second Degree Murder. According to Det.Sgt. Scott Hettinger, "The Carolina Beach Police Department, Carolina Beach Fire Department, Kure Beach Police Department and New Hanover County EMS were dispatched to the 500 block of Carolina Beach Ave. N. in reference to a vehicle versus a pedestrian hit and run. Upon arrival, officers located the victim with serious injuries and life saving measures were in progress. The victim succumbed to his injuries on scene."
Hettinger explained officers conducted a search of the vehicle described by witnesses; the vehicle was located by police a short
time later. Police arrested Erwin Ellis Williams, a 74-year-old male of Carolina Beach, N.C. Williams was charged for multiple offenses and placed on a $100,000-dollar bond and confined in the New Hanover County Jail.  Alcohol is believed to be a contributing factor in the collision. The NC Medical Examiner’s Office has been notified and the Medical Examiner will make the official determination on cause of death.
Erwin Ellis Williams was charged with: (1 Count) Felony Death by Motor Vehicle (1 Count) Hit/Run causing Serious Injury or Death (1 Count) Driving While Impaired.
Police identified the victim as Jeffrey Matlick, a 48 year old male from Geneseo, Illinois.
Hettinger explained on June 30th, that Williams was charged with Second Degree Murder based on his prior history of DWI (Driving While Intoxicated) and Hit and Run charges. Additionally, citizens tried to stop Williams from getting in the vehicle that night.
