CAROLINA BEACH   - The Carolina Beach Municipal Marina at Carl Winner Ave. has experienced damage over the years as a result of numerous hurricanes and tropical storms.
The Town of Carolina Beach was recently notified it has been awarded a grant from the Golden LEAF Foundation for $2.1 million dollars to make needed repairs to the marina.
Hurricane Florence in 2018 caused damage to the marina and Town officials applied for a grant with the FEMA (Federal Emergency Management Agency) to secure funds for repairs.
That application was denied in the early part of 2020.
While the Town appeals FEMA's denial for funding, the Golden Leaf Foundation of North Carolina assisted the Town for their application process and the foundations Board of Directors approved the Town's request.
In a statement from the Town issued last week, officials stated, "The Town of Carolina Beach is grateful to the Golden LEAF Foundation staff for their assistance in the application process and to the Board of Directors for the award. We look forward to working with them to make this a successful project."
A statement from the foundation explained, "Golden LEAF is proud to help communities recover from major storms through the disaster recovery program,” said Scott T. Hamilton, Golden LEAF President, Chief Executive Officer. "This project will help restore critical infrastructure used by local businesses." The Golden LEAF Disaster Recovery Grant Program is funded through appropriations by the State of North Carolina to the Golden LEAF Foundation to make grants to eligible entities to repair or replace damaged or destroyed infrastructure and equipment as well as for the infrastructure to support hazard mitigation resulting from Hurricanes Matthew, Florence, Michael, and Dorian. The award the Town received is one of 13 disaster recovery and resiliency projects funded by the foundation in August.
