NEW HANOVER CTY - 2020 New Hanover County tax bills are their way to your mailbox. The tax department began mailing out bills to property owners earlier this month and should arrive in mailboxes by the middle of the month.
The bills are due September 1st, 2020, but owners can wait without fear of paying interest as long as the bills are paid by January 5th, 2021.
According to the County Tax Department, "Property owners who have escrow taxes will receive a courtesy notice of their tax bill, and are encouraged to verify that their taxes are paid with their mortgage company. New Hanover County residents will see that the county tax rate of 55.5 cents per $100 will remain for the 2020-2021 fiscal year. In addition, the fire services tax rate for residents in the unincorporated county remains at 7.75 cents per $100. Tax bills also include municipality taxes for residents in the City of Wilmington, and the towns of Carolina Beach, Kure Beach and Wrightsville Beach."
Property owners will have the option of making multiple smaller payments. Each bill will include four payment coupons that indicate the total amount owed, separated into four payments. The Tax Department stated that's an effort to help people avoid paying a late penlaty with interest.
According to the Tax Department, "This year included with tax bills will also be an insert with information on how to submit payments online, as well as information on becoming an election official if interested" and, "The Tax Office is always willing to help taxpayers meet their tax obligations, and that is why numerous payment options are offered with a lot of flexibility,” said New Hanover County Tax Administrator Allison Snell. “We want to help residents avoid having to pay interest on taxes, so we ask that you reach out to us before taxes become delinquent on January 5, so we can set up alternate payment arrangements."
Due to COVID-19, the Tax Department will now accept payments online and in drop boxes placed outside of the entrances of the New Hanover County Government Center. Payments can be mailed to the New Hanover County Tax at PO Box 18000, Wilmington, NC 28406. When visiting the Tax Office residents are encouraged to call for assistance at 910-798-7300 before coming in person.
For questions or to make payment arrangements, please contact the Tax Department at (910) 798-7300 or visit www.Tax.NHCgov.com
The current property tax rate for Carolina Beach is .2450 per $100.00 of assessed value and for New Hanover County it is .4903 per $100.00 of assessed value. For example, a piece of property assessed at $92,000.00 would have a New Hanover County tax value of $510.60 and a Carolina Beach tax value of $225.40, for a total tax bill of $736.00. Both county and town property taxes are billed through New Hanover County Tax Office and paid to their office.
