CAROLINA BEACH  - The website safety.com recently ranked Carolina Beach, NC, as the 4th safest Town in North Carolina with Cary, Apex and Huntersville ranking in first, second and third place respectively. It's interesting to note that in our local area, Wrightsville Beach and the well-known quiet and largely crime free Town of Kure Beach were not ranked in the safety.com list.

The Town of Carolina Beach issued a press release on December 12th, which stated, "Carolina Beach was recently named the 4th Safest City in North Carolina for 2020 by Safety.com, a leading home security and safety advocacy website. Analysts from Safety.com assessed data provided by the FBI Crime Report, Gun Violence Archive, U.S. Census Bureau, Insurance Journal and America Health Rankings to create its list of safest cities in North Carolina."

Antonio Lopez Jr, analyst for Safety.com explained, "Our team diligently identified the safest cities beyond just looking at crime rates. We wanted to get the full picture and have our data extend beyond what people would originally look at for the safety of a city, especially in these tough economic times. We took a step further by looking at factors that measure socioeconomic, health and natural disaster safety in addition to public safety in this study."

According to the Town's press release, "Cities were analyzed on public safety, financial safety, state-level natural disaster and health metrics. The criteria for public safety include: property crime, violent crime aggravated assaults, hate crime and mass shootings. Criteria for financial and socioeconomic factors include: unemployment rate, cost of living, poverty rate, uninsured residents and internet access."

The release stated, "State-level natural disaster and health safety scoring factors involve calculating the state’s natural disaster risk and health score based on access to health insurance, air pollution ratings, number of drug deaths and number of mental health providers."

It should be noted the ranking presented by safety.com did not indicate whether they factored in the COVID-19 pandemic in terms of crime or financial status of the limited number of municipalities listed on their website.

Carolina Beach is a safe place to live, but if you read the weekly police beat in the Island Gazette (page 2-A) our police department deals with many cases on a weekly basis.

Other municipalities such as Chapel Hill, Leland, Wrightsville Beach and Winston Salem did not show up on the list.

Safety.com describes it's service stating, "Our team of writers, editors and analysts continuously researches today’s safety providers, products, services and news. We then work to provide you with personalized recommendations, easy to use tools, unique data and insights and an expert point of view on the safety issues you care about. We also let you know how and why we recommend any product or service with a transparent methodology and explanation of our process."

They display logos and links on their website including:
- ADT
- SimpliSafe
- Protect America
- LifeLock

And many others. Their website states, "We’re a group of dedicated researchers and advisors persistently finding and comparing the best products to help secure your home and keep you safe."
