Jan Brett, world-famous children’s author and illustrator, has traveled the world, now the staff and students of Codington Elementary want her to visit their school to share some of her experiences with them. Codington Elementary, located on Carolina Beach Road in Wilmington, started a massive social media campaign in the hopes of getting a visit from this legendary children’s author, Jan Brett. Brett has written more then 20 books and sold over an estimated 37 million copies. Brett has traveled the world researching traditions, customs and animals for her books.
In January, Brett started a competition on Facebook vowing to visit the school or library in American that had the most invites. Codington is one of several hundred schools or libraries across the nation actively competing for her visit. As of March 3, Codington was 9th on this list.
“If she came here, it would be a thrill for our students; obviously, but it’d also be really good for New Hanover County,” said Mr. Budd Dingwall, principal of Codington Elementary. “She really is one of the leading children’s authors and to get to her, would be a wonderful opportunity for our students.”
The Codington campaign started with parents and teachers but has quickly transformed into a community effort. Anyone can invite the author on behalf of the school. All you have to do is click on Brett’s Facebook page and click on the contest link on the top of her page to complete a short form with the Codington’s name and address. The deadline for entries is April 9, 2012.
