Pat Efird and Councilman Alan Gilbert were joined by residents and staff in celebrating the official opening of the town’s newest multi-use fitness trail yesterday afternoon.
A ribbon-cutting ceremony was held at the trail and a reception followed at Town Hall.
The new one-mile trail – located adjacent to Dow Road near the entrance of Carolina Beach State Park - was made
possible through a North Carolina Department of Transportation (NCDOT) Transportation Equity Act for the 21st Century (TEA-21) grant in the amount of $141,000.
Both Carolina Beach and Kure Beach have recently submitted Master Plans for Trails to NCDOT.
If the Master Plan is approved in June, Carolina Beach plans to extend the current trail. Both towns want a long fitness trail that would connect and extend through the island.
Mayor Clark - an avid biker himself - said the new trail makes the Town of Carolina Beach a more bicycle-friendly place and a great place for just about any type of fitness enthusiast. He acknowledged Margaret Gray, a greenway architect from McKim & Creed who designed the trail, Terry Taylor, Head Ranger at Carolina Beach State Park and other supporters who helped the town with the project.
