Attorney General Roy Cooper won a court order in April banning one Illinois company that made these calls from calling North Carolinians and requiring it to pay more than half a million dollars in fines. Unfortunately, other robo call groups using names such as Card Services are running a similar scam. These bogus robo calls appear to come from out of the country and are an attempt to gather your personal information, which could lead to identity theft.
If you get one of these calls, hang up the phone.
Do not “press one”, and never give your personal information to someone you don’t know who calls you on the phone. Under North Carolina law, pre-recorded sales pitches are illegal unless a live caller first introduces the call and asks you if you want to hear a recorded message.
If you’ve been the victim of this or a similar scam, please contact Attorney General Roy Cooper’s Consumer Protection division for assistance at 1-877-5-NO-SCAM.
