N.C.Aquarium Society has once again received a four-star rating from Charity Navigator

The North Carolina Aquarium Society has once again received a four-star rating from Charity Navigator.  Based on the Society’s 2011 financial report, this coveted award is given for sound fiscal management and commitment to accountability and transparency. Charity Navigator, America’s premier charity evaluator, highlights the fine work of efficient, ethical and open charities with a goal of providing donors with essential information needed to give them confidence in the charitable choices they make.
The North Carolina Aquarium Society is a 501(c)3 non-profit organization established in 1986 to provide financial support to the three N.C. Aquariums. Funds are raised through membership, private donations, corporate sponsorships, and gift shop operations, which are managed by the Society. Since its establishment, the N.C. Aquarium Society has contributed in excess of $20 million to the three Aquariums - enabling them to renovate, expand, and grow their attendance. Ken Berger, Charity Navigator president and CEO, noted in his congratulatory letter, “As the nonprofit sector continues to grow at an unprecedented pace, savvy donors are demanding more accountability, transparency and quantifiable results from the charities they choose to support.” The N.C. Aquarium Society has consistently received high ratings from Charity Navigator since they were first evaluated in 2001. And, in 2010 they received a “Best in the Nation” designation for their category, Zoos and Aquariums.  “We are very pleased to once again receive the prestigious four-star rating from Charity Navigator,” noted N.C. Aquarium Society President, Neal Conoley.  “This ranking demonstrates the success of our organization and our board of directors’ stewardship of the dollars we raise, as well as instills confidence among our stakeholders that the Society has the best interest of the Aquariums at heart.”
The three N.C. Aquariums, located at Fort Fisher, Pine Knoll Shores, and Roanoke Island, are operated by the North Carolina Department of Environment and Natural Resources (NCDENR).  Providing more than $2 million in annual support, the N.C. Aquarium Society works in conjunction with the State to operate and maintain the three facilities. To become a member or learn more about the Aquariums visit www.ncaquariums.com.
