First Graders Celebrate the Apple

For the past two weeks first graders at Carolina Beach Elementary School have been studying and celebrated the apple. Students read about American Pioneer Johnny Appleseed who introduced apple trees to large parts of Pennsylvania, Ohio, Indiana, and Illinois. They also learned vocabulary associated with the apple like seed, core and sapling. Last Thursday students had an “Apple Tasting” where they explored the different types of apples like Golden Delicious, Gala Fuji and more. The students filled out data sheets using three adjectives to describe the way each apple taste. They closed out the week with an Apple Celebration; each student simply answered “yes” or “no” determining how different apple dishes tasted. This week students will use the data sheets they compiled to graph out the amount of different likes and dislikes to each dish. Special thanks to everyone who donated apple goodies to make the celebration possible!
