WILMINGTON, NC - New Hanover Regional Medical Center has recently received statewide recognition for excellence, being featured in the March Business North Carolina article on the state's "best hospitals." According to the data, NHRMC is ranked 8th out of 30 of the state's top hospitals, along with UNC Hospitals, Wake Forest Baptist Medical Center and Presbyterian Hospital. NHRMC is also ranked 8th in patient picks.
In addition, the magazine noted that Blue Cross and Blue Shield of North Carolina recognized NHRMC as a “cutting-edge hospital” for its bariatrics program and is considered a standout hospital for cardiology and heart surgery, pulmonology, gastroenterology and orthopedics. “This achievement is a reflection of the hard work of our board of trustees, physicians, nurses and staff, and their dedication to our patients,” says Jack Barto, president and chief executive officer at New Hanover Regional Medical Center. “We are honored to be recognized for the high quality care we offer to the residents of this region.”
The rankings were based on data from Medicare and Medicaid, the North Carolina Hospital Association and other sources on criteria including patient satisfaction, readmission rates for certain conditions, patient safety records and others. Blue Cross and Blue Shield of North Carolina recognized hospitals based on quality and expertise in the delivery of surgical procedures. It combines objective data from multiple sources with the insurer’s experience and collaboration with physicians and professional organizations.
“We strive to provide excellent care to all of our patients by continually evaluating our processes, standardizing care to ensure quality, and offering the services our patients value,” Barto says.
The results of NHRMC's focus on delivering consistently high quality care are evident through NHRMC's numerous accreditations and awards. In the past few years, NHRMC has been recognized as a top-ranked Community Value Provider by Cleverley + Associates, and NHRMC, its Cape Fear campus and Pender Memorial Hospital were part of the 29 percent of hospitals nationwide that did not receive penalties from the Centers for Medicare and Medicaid Services (CMS) during the recent review period. The NHRMC Heart Center has received recognition for excellence from the American College of Cardiology, the American Heart Association and the Society of Thoracic Surgeons. NHRMC’s Zimmer Cancer Center has received an Outstanding Achievement Award from the Commission on Cancer of the American College of Surgeons and the NHRMC Rehabilitation Hospital received national accreditation from the Commission on Accreditation of Rehabilitation Facilities. The NHRMC Orthopedic Hospital at the Cape Fear campus was recently recognized as a Blue Distinction® Center, a total value designation for hip & knee replacement, by Blue Cross Blue Shield.
