Island Hots opened in March 2012, and is in its second summer season serving up hot dogs. Owner, Ronald Stevens, is customer conscience and wants to make your dining experience all that it can be. In addition to a variety of ways to enjoy a hot dog, he also offers a vegetarian hot dog, which is steamed to order. He also offers gluten free rolls and some of the toppings are vegetarian. This year he has added a chopped bar-b-cue pork sandwich with cole slaw the cost is $3.75 and bar-b-cue pork fully loaded nachos which is $4.50.
Some of the variety of hot dogs that is offered are Carolina which the dog is served with yellow mustard, chili and slaw; Island Hot is served with deli mustard, slaw, Island relish, and onions; All The Way served with yellow mustard, chili, slaw and onion; German which of course is served with sauerkraut and deli mustard; the Salsa Dog has cheese sauce, mild salsa and jalapenos. Plus you can decide what toppings you want on your hot dog, and there is no extra charge for the toppings you use. The best sellers are the Carolina, All The Way and Island Hot.
His expanded menu includes chicken tenders, natural cut fries with sea salt, overloaded fries, beer battered onion rings and if you cannot make up on your mind as to whether you want fries or onion rings he offers the Frings basket, which is the combination of fries and rings and that is only $3.50. Keeping children in mind, he offers the Kid’s Island Flyer, the meal is served on an Island Hots Flyer (Frisbee) and there is a choice of hot dog or two chicken tenders, fries and a drink and that is $4.50.
The cole slaw is made fresh daily. He also makes his own Island relish, which includes sweet red pepper relish with onions and jalapenos and you can only get it there, it is his own secret recipe. He enjoys chatting with his customers, and if you are visiting the island and are not sure what to do, where to go, he will explain the venues of the area and steer you in the right direction. For instance when the restaurant closes on Sunday evenings, he places a poster that announces that evening’s movie that is being played at the lake.
All of the prices are very competitive. The family atmosphere makes it a delight to eat there either inside or out in the courtyard seating. There is enough light to eat by outdoors and the umbrellas come down Thursday nights for the fireworks, so you have a full view. The outside seating is also pet-friendly, yes, you can bring your pet and a bowl of water will be given to the pet. He even places a fresh bowl of water every day for the pets walking by the restaurant.
Stevens has increased the beer line this year, and also has a variety of cold drinks. There is an information center of the other island businesses to keep all the customers informed, his wall of fame includes the customers enjoying their meal and is always looking for a pictures to add to the wall.
It is counter service, once you place your order you can go to your table and they will deliver your meal to you so you do not have to stand and wait for it. Come and enjoy the company and welcoming atmosphere, and some good hot dogs.
