NEW HANOVER CTY - Residents of New Hanover County will soon have a place to take waste that's unsafe to throw away. New Hanover County's Environmental Management department is pleased to announce the grand opening of its household hazardous waste (HHW) collection facility. The grand opening ceremony, which is open to the public, will take place at 10 a.m. Wednesday, May 15, 2013. The facility will be open Monday through Friday 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. and Saturday 8 a.m. to 12 p.m. The site will replace the county's one-day collection activities.
Located at 3002 US Hwy 421 N., New Hanover County residents will be able to dispose of their waste free of charge. Household hazardous waste material contains chemicals that are toxic, flammable, corrosive or reactive. Some residential waste can be pesticides, paint, used oil, antifreeze, fertilizers, electronic waste, batteries, mercury-containing bulbs, lamps, or thermostats.
Improper disposal of household hazardous waste can contaminate ground and surface waters and poses a direct threat to health and the environment. For more information, visit http://www.nhcgov.com/Environmental or call (910) 798-4403.
