CAROLINA BEACH - A $1.6 million dollar project to widen Dow Road on Pleasure Island is nearly complete. The project has widened the state highway and added turn lanes at high-traffic intersections including Cape Fear Blvd, Harper Avenue and Ocean Blvd. Dow Road runs north and south along the west side of the Island from Kure Beach to Carolina Beach.
Temporary lines have been painted in preparation for more permanent lines to be installed.
The project is also designed to make drainage improvements. Road construction and traffic markings were planned to be complete before the summer season on May 1, 2013. Delays extended the project but last week officials with the North Carolina Department of Transportation said the project should be completed by Memorial Day weekend.
Work will likely continue
through October 2013 to finalize the project by establishing permanent vegetation.
The wider road will accommodate the addition of the turn lanes and improve the shoulder conditions along the sandy sides of the road from Carolina Beach to Kure Beach.
