New Hanover County Schools Releases Make Up Schedule for Days Missed Due to Winter Storm

NEW HANOVER CTY - Students attending New Hanover County Schools will make up four snow days as a result of last week's winter storm. Make up days will not be held on Saturdays or during spring break.
In the aftermath of the storm, restoring lost instructional time is the top priority. In addition to replacing instructional time, other factors that had to be considered include payroll deadlines, employee leave adjustments and other related costs. District officials also considered input from Board members, parents, employees and other key stakeholders.
"We listened to the community and this make up schedule reflects the most effective options available to us. Everyone emphasized the importance of restoring the instructional time and many asked us to avoid taking time away from spring break. This schedule still exceeds the 1025 instructional hours required by the state," Superintendent Dr. Tim Markley said. The following is the make up schedule for New Hanover County Schools students on the traditional calendar:
• Friday, February 14, 2014 will become a full instructional day. (Previously, this was an early release day - Staff Development Day.)
• Friday, March 28, 2014 will become a full instructional day. (Previously, this was an early release day - Staff Development Day.)
• Thursday, June 12, 2014 will become a instructional full day. (Previously, this was an early release day and the last day of school.)
• Friday, June 13, 2014 will be added to the school calendar. (This will be an early release day day and the last day of school. The district's testing schedule will be changed to reflect the new end of the school year.)
Year Round Calendar Make Up Schedule:
• Friday, February 14, 2014 will become a full instructional day. (Previously, this was an early release day - Staff Development Day.)
• Friday, March 28, 2014 will become a full instructional day. (Previously, this was an early release day - Staff Development Day.)
• Thursday, June 19, 2014 - will become a full instructional day. (Previously, this was the last day of school.)
• Friday, June 20, 2014 - will become the last day of school. (Previously, this was a designated Staff Development Day.)
Should any other make up days become necessary for the remainder of the academic year, those days will be made up on Saturdays with the dates to be determined. The New Hanover County Board of Education is expected to officially approve the make up schedule at their next regular meeting on Tuesday, February 11, 2014.
